第一波情绪（Emo）浪潮是早期的情绪核（Emocore），是华盛顿特区硬核场景（ D.C. Hardcore）的一个分支。到了1993年，第二波情绪浪潮（Second Wave Emo）开始形成，首先是一种原始的、原生态的子流派，有时被称为“地下室情绪”（ Basement Emo），代表乐队有Still Life、Indian Summer。但与这一时期最常见的子流派无疑是中西部情绪（ Midwest Emo），其特点是交替使用大音量和小音量的动态；离调的、矜持的、甚至做作的人声，很少有尖叫声；以及“Twinkly”琶音吉他声。此外，一些早期的情绪流行（ Emo-Pop）作品也在这一时期出现。到了2002年，第三波情绪浪潮（Third Wave Emo，主流情绪流行时代）将完全形成。
